We like Crystal City as a good location for tourist during the weekend because hotel rates drop tremendously as business travelers leave town on Friday. As for staying in Crystal City, stick with your favorite hotel brand and double check rates. Travelers who like location and want to impress a loved one should look into the DoubleTree near the Pentagon City Metro. For everyday travelers the best option may be the Hampton Inn largely in part to the free breakfast. This is not an ideal location for travelers who want to park their car at the hotel. Each of the other hotels require a 2-3 block walk and crossing the busy route 1 which is the main road through Crystal City. Either the Marriott (Gateway), or Westin will be your best for the closest access to the Crystal City Metro, about 1.5 blocks away. Since this is a business hub, rates typically fall on the weekends. Most of the hotels offer shuttle access to the airport making this a preferred location for anyone flying in and out of DCA.
